About Wanaka Helicopters

Simon Spencer-Bower formed Canterbury Helicopters and started operations near Christchurch in Canterbury in 1980. Canterbury Helicopters established a branch of its operation in Wanaka in the mid 1990’s to be involved in the growth of tourism in the Southern Lakes region. The Wanaka branch was named Wanaka Helicopters and now operates a fleet of helicopters on a variety of tasks ranging from flight training to commercial work such as filming, survey, lifting etc, to the company’s main focus of scenic flying. Wanaka Helicopters is the premier helicopter operator in the Lake Wanaka region and it’s Helicopter Flight School is NZ’s most experienced, providing above average, superior flight training to national and international students.

Being situated on the doorstep of the World Heritage Mount Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks means Wanaka Helicopters can offer scenic flights that encompass more epic land and seascapes and spectacular vistas than anywhere else in New Zealand.

Wanaka Helicopters operates all year round, specialising in providing safe, high quality type scenic flying and touring that is very personal, informative, relaxing, yet maybe even slightly adventurous. Being nature and eco conscious we put emphasis on showing visitors the true, unique, unspoiled natural aspects of this wonderful land. We like to cater for smaller groups so that the flight experience remains personal, individual, flexible, and unrushed. We can personalise or custommake any flight to cater for any special requests or variations. We can provide lunches, picnics and even champagne breakfasts that can be eaten in remote wilderness locations.

Wanaka Helicopters offers a variety of standard flights into the National Parks and surrounding areas, and to spectacular Milford Sound. All scenic flights include remote alpine landings and walk arounds. We operate a variety of sizes of helicopters, which means that no minimum passenger numbers apply to our flights. We can cater for all number combinations. Wanaka Helicopters also offers a product called Heli-Adventures, which includes soft adventure type activities for the more adventurous, such as mountain biking, fishing, hiking and jet boating.

We operate from Wanaka Airport, which is situated on State Highway 6 between Wanaka and Queenstown. Our highly experienced pilots and staff are warm, friendly, enthusiastic and genuinely passionate about our activity and environment, and want to provide visitors with an experience that is safe, unique and best represents and fulfils their need to experience the icons that drew them to New Zealand in the first place.
